HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A chase that began when campus officers at the University of Alabama in Huntsville tried to stop a car for a traffic violation early Friday ended with a police shooting near downtown Huntsville, officials said.

Officers pursued a car after the driver failed to pull over when campus police attempted the traffic stop about 4 a.m., UAH spokesman Ray Garner said in a statement to news outlets.

Huntsville police joined in, and the chase ended at an intersection where Garner said a suspect rammed two university police cars and tried to strike an officer with his vehicle. A UAH officer opened fire, Garner said, but it was unclear whether anyone else did.

The driver of the car was hospitalized with gunshot wounds, and another person may have been wounded and was taken to a hospital.

“The two UAH police officers were placed on administrative leave pending the completion of the investigation,” Garner said. Huntsville police will investigate.

Authorities did not immediately release the name of anyone involved.

The university was closed for spring break this week.
