JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Police in Mississippi’s capital city say there are more than 600 sexual abuse and rape kits that have not had DNA evaluated.

The Clarion Ledger of Jackson reported police told city council this week that most of the cases are from rape and sexual assault incidents where the victims do not want to pursue charges.

Some kits are more than 10 years old. If evaluated, they could lead to the prosecution of cases involving serial rapes even if victims do not want to pursue the matter.

There is no statute of limitations for rape or the sexual abuse of a child in Mississippi. There is a limit of two years on other sexual abuse cases.

City officials want to seek a federal grant to pay to have the kits evaluated.
