SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah Republican Party chairman says he won’t run for another term amid party infighting over a law changing how political candidates are nominated.
Chairman Rob Anderson said Wednesday he can’t unify the party during heated debate over the 2014 law.
His decision comes after members of the state central committee voted to censure him for disregarding a bylaw change backed by opponents of the measure.
It would have punished some candidates for taking a route created by the law and gathering voter signatures to compete in a primary rather than going through the caucus and convention system.
The party lost a lawsuit challenging the statute after taking it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The party is expected to choose a new chair in May.
