PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island Republican lawmakers have named their top choices to become the state’s next party chairman.
The Providence Journal reports that House and Senate Republicans announced Thursday the three candidates that have their unanimous endorsement are: Mike Veri, former East Greenwich Town Council President Sue Cienki, and former Rep. Ken Mendonca.
Veri is a lab director at Landmark Medical Center who ran an unsuccessful campaign to unseat a Democratic senator last year.
Mendonca said before the announcement he is withdrawing from consideration.
He says it had become apparent that his candidacy for GOP chair was not gaining traction.
The vote on party chairman will take place at the Republican Party’s annual meeting March 30.
Republicans hold no congressional seats or statewide offices, and only 14 seats in the General Assembly.
