Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley called out Sen. Bernie Sanders Wednesday for criticizing the average cost of childbirth when he is “not the woman” having a baby.
Mr. Sanders compared the average financial burden in the U.S. with that of Finland in a March 6 tweet, saying it cost “$12,000 to have a baby” in America but only $60 in the European country.
“Alright [Bernie Sanders,] you’re not the woman having the baby so I wouldn’t be out there talking about skimping on a woman when it comes to childbirth. Trust me! Nice try though,” Mrs. Haley responded.
“Health care costs are too high that is true but comparing us to Finland is ridiculous. Ask them how their health care is. You won’t like their answer,” the former Republican governor of South Carolina added.
The former U.S. ambassador received a series of tweets from Kai Sauer, Finland’s permanent representative to the UN.
“Finland has a high performing health system, with remarkable good quality in both primary and hospital care. The country also achieves good health status at relatively low level of health spending,” Mr. Sauer wrote.
He also tweeted Finland has “the world’s third lowest infant mortality rate” and “maternal mortality is the lowest in the world.”
Mrs. Haley resigned as U.N. ambassador in October, saying it was “time to step aside” from public service after six years in the South Carolina governor’s mansion and two at work for the Trump administration.
