Pete Buttigieg, South Bend, Indiana, mayor and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, said Wednesday the Electoral College should “absolutely” be removed.
When asked about the Electoral College during an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Mr. Buttigieg responded simply, “Absolutely, it has got to go.”
While Mr. Buttigieg first began talking of abolishing the Electoral College during a CNN town hall earlier this month, the idea picked up steam Monday after fellow Democratic presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren said the same in a town hall.
The Massachusetts senator said she wants the Electoral College abolished, stating “every vote matters” but only if “we can have national voting.”
A handful of other 2020 candidates, including Sen. Kamala Harris and former Reps. Beto O’Rourke and John Delaney, have all said this week they would consider removing the system.
President Trump defended the Electoral College on Tuesday, arguing that it keeps major cities from overpowering less populated areas in smaller states and the Midwest.
“I used to like the idea of the Popular Vote, but now realize the Electoral College is far better for the U.S.A.” he tweeted.
