Sen. Johnny Isakson criticized Wednesday President Trump’s comments against the late Sen. John McCain, addressing the president’s “lack of respect for his service.”

“It’s deplorable what he said, it will be deplorable if he says it again,” the Republican senator said to Georgia Public Radio show “Political Rewind.”

“I will continue to speak out. We should never reduce the service people given to this country,” he added.

Mr. Isakson said in a Bulwark interview Wednesday that “the country deserves better, the McCain family deserves better.”

“I don’t care if he’s president of United States, owns all the real estate in New York, or is building the greatest immigration system in the world, nothing is more important than the integrity of the country and those who fought and risked their lives for all of us,” Mr. Isakson said.

Mr. Trump said on Tuesday that he was “never a fan of John McCain” and he “never will be,” while meeting with the president of Brazil.

Sen. Martha McSally, who currently occupies the late senator’s seat, tweeted Wednesday Mr. McCain is “an American hero” and his family and him should be given “the respect, admiration, and peace they deserve.”

Mr. Isakson said in August that anyone who “tarnishes the reputation of John McCain deserves a whipping.”
