SINSHEIM, Germany (AP) - Hoffenheim is bringing Alfred Schreuder back from Ajax to take over as coach from the departing Julian Nagelsmann.
The Bundesliga side says Schreuder, who worked as Nagelsmann’s assistant before departing for a similar role at Ajax in January, will return from July 1 after signing a deal through June 2022.
Nagelsmann, who saved Hoffenheim from relegation in 2016 and led the side to Europa League and Champions League qualification in the next seasons, had already agreed last summer to take over Bundesliga rival Leipzig for next season.
Hoffenheim sporting director Alexander Rosen says: “Alfred knows our structures and most of the team, and he contributed significantly to the success of the past years through his outstanding expertise and strategic, clear and communicative manner.”
The 46-year-old Schreuder, who played 338 games as a midfielder in the Dutch league, began his coaching career as assistant at Twente before taking on the main coaching role. He became Huub Stevens’ assistant at Hoffenheim in October 2015 before answering Ajax’s call in January. He will remain as assistant to Ajax coach Erik ten Hag for the rest of the season.
