PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Unlike the Rhode Island House, where every argument and compromise in its committee hearings is recorded, the state Senate is unusually camera shy.
The Providence Journal reports the majority of the hearings held in the Senate’s 10 committees are unrecorded, including those held by the Senate Finance Committee, which reviews the state budget.
Senate spokesman Greg Pare says the State House’s design is not conducive to holding multiple televised meetings.
Pare says the Senate also doesn’t record audio. He says there is limited equipment, and the system is incapable of streaming recordings.
The House started audio recording hearings that weren’t captured on video in 2014.
Pare says the Senate will explore improving rooms to allow TV cameras in the offseason.
