The Washington Redskins added depth along their offensive line Monday, signing tackle Erick Flowers to a one-year, $4 million deal.
Flowers has experience playing both at both tackle spots, but the Redskins plan on using him at guard.
Redskins senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams said last week that guard was still a major position of need. Shawn Lauvao, who started five games before suffering a season-ending injury, is a free agent. Ty Nsekhe, a swing tackle who filled in at guard during the year, joined the Buffalo Bills this offseason.
Drafted ninth overall in 2015 by the New York Giants, Flowers has struggled mightily in the NFL. The Giants released him last October and he latched on with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the last seven games.
According to Stats LLC, Flowers has allowed 19 sacks in 59 career games. He also committed 19 holding penalties and six false starts.
With 2018 third-rounder Geron Christian recovering from MCL surgery during the offseason, Flowers could also fill in at swing tackle.
Flowers is the latest former Giant to sign with the Redskins this offseason, joining safety Landon Collins and cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
