NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) - A monument at the site of Gen. George Washington’s final New York headquarters to commemorate the end of the Revolutionary War will reopen next month.
The state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation says the public will be able to visit the Tower of Victory starting April 27 with activities including re-enactments of musket drills.
The tower at the Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site in Newburgh was built in the 1880s to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the American Revolution. Washington spent the last 16 months of the war at his headquarters in Newburgh.
The tower’s roof had to be removed after it was heavily damaged in a 1950 hurricane. The roof was replaced and other upgrades were made during a three-year restoration project.
