DENVER (AP) - The union representing 12,000 workers with King Soopers and City Market grocery stores in Colorado has voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike in their contract dispute.
The two-day vote completed Friday night by members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 does not mean they are on strike. It only means that workers have authorized the union to pursue that course of action.
King Soopers and City Market employ about 23,000 workers statewide. The existing contract expired in January.
Issues raised by the union include seeking across-the-board pay raises and rising employee health care costs.
King Soopers/City Market, a local subsidiary of Ohio-based grocery Kroger, contends its latest contract proposal offers pay raises for “top rate” associates and others and wouldn’t add costs to employees’ health benefits packages.
