RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The mayor of North Carolina’s capital city won’t seek a fifth term.
In a video Wednesday, Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane cited accomplishments on economic development and the arts - but also the current climate of divisiveness.
McFarlane said: “The mean politics of Twitter and social media is painful when it’s about you or someone that you love.”
She added that politics in the city of about 465,000 “could use a reset.”
The announcement comes after a city councilwoman accused McFarlane’s husband of verbally and physically attacking her at a meeting last month. No police report was filed then. McFarlane acknowledged in a statement her husband responded too strongly.
McFarlane served two City Council terms starting in 2007 before her 2011 election as the second woman to serve as Raleigh mayor.
