ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A New York sculptor has been chosen to create a monument honoring one of the leading abolitionists and suffragettes of the 19th century.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo today Monday that Vinnie Bagwell, of Yonkers, has been commissioned to create a monument commemorating Sojourner Truth. The Democrat says she “helped blaze a trail for women and people of color across the country.”
The monument, a 7-foot bronze statue, will be placed at the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, a former railroad bridge linking Ulster and Dutchess counties.
Truth was born into slavery in Ulster County in the late 18th century. After being sold three times, she escaped to freedom in 1826. The rest of her life was dedicated to the abolitionist and women’s rights movements until her death in 1883.
