COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Members of the South Carolina House have started debating the state’s nearly $9 billion spending plan.
Representatives started Monday by approving dozens of sections of the budget that had no changes or serious objections by large margins.
They delayed taking action other sections of the spending plan that had proposed amendments or where members wanted discussion.
House budget writers say their priorities for the coming fiscal year include spending $159 million to raise teacher salaries by 4 percent, $44 million to freeze college tuition for in-state students, $41 million to provide state workers earning less than $100,000 with a 2 percent pay raise and $40 million for new voting machines.
The House will return Tuesday morning and continue the budget debate.
