PEAKS ISLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine residents are pushing back against a plan to build a new ferry that will travel to Peaks Island.
The Portland Press Herald reports residents are asking federal regulators to see whether Casco Bay Lines is meeting grant requirements for public participation in designing the ferry.
Resident Lisa Penalver says the public meetings have been sparse and poorly advertised. She says that the needs of tourists are being placed before the wellbeing of those who live on the island.
A spokesperson for the Federal Transit Administration says the ferry service has met its obligations for public participation.
Casco Bay Lines general manager Hank Berg says no final decisions have been made on the vessel size or design.
The new ferry is expected to cost $10 million.
