AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The public can weigh in on the environmental impacts of a proposed $1 billion hydropower transmission line to supply Canadian hydropower to consumers in Massachusetts.
Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection is set to hold hearings from April 1 to April 5 in Farmington. Maine’s Land Use Planning Commission will co-host the April 2 hearing.
Central Maine Power’s proposed $258 million in incentives including money for low-income consumers won Democratic Gov. Janet Mills’ support for the 145-mile transmission line through western Maine. Mills said the project will reduce the region’s reliance on fossil fuels, without costing Mainers.
State agencies will consider impacts on scenic character, wildlife habitat and fisheries, as well as CMP’s proposed compensation.
Maine’s Public Utilities Commission is working on a report on the case due March 18.
