BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Convention planners say the upcoming Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Birmingham is one of the city’s largest events ever.
A pastor’s meeting opens Sunday, followed by the main assembly on Tuesday and Wednesday. And thousands of Baptist delegates will fill rooms in more than three dozen hotels as they meet.
The city’s tourism agency says the meeting will have an economic impact of $18 million as denomination members gather in the state’s largest city at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex.
Tourism officials say the size of the gathering is second only to the 1995 meeting of the National Baptist Convention in Birmingham.
