CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak says he’s confident that the passage of a payroll tax extension would withstand any legal scrutiny.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports state lawmakers pushed the bill through Monday without the two-thirds supermajority vote that’s typically required for raising taxes.
The Democratic governor and legislators say the extension of the state’s modified business tax is not an increase or a new tax that requires the action.
Republican lawmakers disagree.
The Legislative Counsel Bureau sided with Democrats in an opinion issued last month.
Sisolak says he’s “confident that the attorneys gave us a good opinion” that only a simple majority was needed.
The tax is projected to raise $98 million over two years to fund school safety, teacher raises and the private school voucher program.
