OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A former Republican lawmaker and recent adviser to Gov. Kevin Stitt is being sworn in as the top federal prosecutor in Oklahoma City.
Timothy Downing took the oath of office Wednesday as the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma. President Donald Trump nominated Downing in March, and the U.S. Senate confirmed him last month.
The 40-year-old Downing worked as an assistant attorney general for five years in the criminal appeals division before his election to a state House seat in 2016. He served one term and earned a reputation as a tough-on-crime lawmaker who worked to undo voter-backed initiatives to reduce criminal penalties for drug possession.
Downing didn’t seek re-election in 2018 and most recently worked in the Oklahoma Secretary of State’s office under Stitt.
