HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) - Railroad police are cracking down on people who illegally walk on or across tracks in southwestern Ohio.
The Hamilton-Middletown Journal-News reports the Norfolk Southern and CSX rail systems have been issuing warnings to people in the Hamilton area.
Norfolk Southern’s Atlanta-based manager of special investigations, Hugh McCormack, says the effort is a “trespasser abatement program.” He says the company takes action in communities that have high rates of trespassing and resulting injuries.
Federal authorities say 20 pedestrians were killed on Ohio tracks last year.
A 16-year-old student in the southwestern Ohio village of Carlisle died after being hit by a train in April. A man was injured by a train in Hamilton the next day.
Authorities say people should use designated crossings and always assume a train is coming.
