MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a man by a police officer in a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said the Collierville Police Department responded Monday morning to a call about a man who was possibly suicidal and carrying a gun.
Officers found 59-year-old David Richard Hoal in the backyard of his home. TBI says officers repeatedly demanded that Hoal drop the gun.
TBI says that at least one officer then shot and killed Hoal. TBI is trying to determine why the officer opened fire.
After TBI completes its investigation, the state police agency will submit a report to the district attorney, who will decide whether to pursue charges against the officer.
Collierville is a city of about 50,000 people, located east of Memphis.
