DETROIT (AP) - A civilian oversight board has postponed a vote on a formal policy for the use of facial recognition software by Detroit police.
The Detroit News reports that Detroit Board of Police Commissioners Chair Willie Bell said Thursday the issue still was being reviewed.
Facial recognition software compares facial feature information from photos or videos with images in a database. The technology has alarmed privacy and civil liberties advocates. Detroit police have had the software about a year.
The city’s proposed policy requires the use of other evidence along with the software after a crime suspect has been identified. Police Chief James Craig said the policy also only allows random scanning of faces if there is a credible terrorism threat.
He told reporters Thursday the department is not randomly scanning faces in public places.
