Kara Lawson, a former Washington Mystics point guard and television analyst for the Wizards, has joined the Boston Celtics as an assistant coach, ESPN reported.

An Alexandria, Virginia, native, Lawson was serving as a Wizards analyst for NBC Sports Washington as well as a commentator for ESPN’s WNBA coverage.

In her playing days, Lawson won a WNBA title with the Sacramento Monarchs in 2005 and an Olympic gold medal with Team USA in the 2008 Games in Beijing.

Lawson, 38, is the latest in a line of women being hired to NBA coaching staffs. The Cleveland Cavaliers hired University of California women’s basketball coach Lindsay Gottlieb to their coaching staff earlier this year.

Current Mystics point guard Kristi Toliver spent the NBA season as a Wizards assistant coach, the first known example of an active WNBA player coaching in the NBA.

Former WNBA star Becky Hammon is an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs.
