Washington Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal won the Seasonlong NBA Cares Community Assist Award Monday night. Beal is the second Wizard, after John Wall, to take home the award.
Wall presented the award to Beal at the NBA Awards Show. The injured point guard won the award in the 2015-16 season. The Wizards are the first to have two winners.
“I can tell you his commitment to the youth of our city is already changing their future,” Wall said.
Beal accepted the award alongside two students he’s mentored from Ron Brown College Preparatory High School in D.C..
The NBA star has shadowed the school’s principal, participated in activities and offered motivation to students during his visits to the school campus, according to NBA.com.
“He’s like an older brother to us,” Tah’j Davis, a student, said in a video presented at the ceremony.
Beal gave the basketball team new shoes and took students on a private tour of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. He said the D.C. school was much like the one he attended growing up in St. Louis.
“Brother Beal is an agent of change and adopting our school shows that he’s invested in the improvement of young people,” principal Benjamin Williams said.
