LOMA LINDA, Calif. (AP) - A federal study finds inadequate training of staff may have contributed to an increase in deadly infections at a Veterans Affairs medical center in Southern California.

The VA’s Office of Inspector General released a report this week finding staff failed to show they made any corrective actions after Legionella growth was discovered at the Pettis Medical Center in Loma Linda.

Legionella bacteria cause Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia.

Inspectors found that an increase in the life-threatening infection C. difficile might be also linked to the lack of cleanliness.

The Loma Linda facility serves more than 76,000 veterans.

The medical center tells the Orange County Register that corrective actions recommended by the report are underway.
