Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida on Friday became the third member of the Congressional Black Caucus to endorse Sen. Kamala Harris’ 2020 presidential campaign.

Mr. Hastings said Ms. Harris is “the right choice to lead our nation.”

“We live in historically troubling times and are in desperate need of leadership that exemplifies courage, conviction and moral clarity,” he said. “Kamala has delivered results for the American people at every level of government and is ready to solve for the issues that especially impact communities of color including access to quality and affordable health care.”

Ms. Harris also has the support of two other CBC members, Reps. Barbara Lee, a fellow California Democrat, and Al Green of Texas, who endorsed her Thursday.

The latest endorsement comes as the candidates prepare to gather in South Carolina for Rep. James E. Clyburn’s “World Famous Fish Fry” and ahead of the first debate, which is being held next week on back-to-back nights to accommodate the massive field.

It also follows a week in which Democratic front-runner Joseph R. Biden came under fire after touting his ability to work with people that he didn’t agree with, even segregationists, to get things done as a member of the Senate.

Members of the CBC have been torn between backing the former vice president, Ms. Harris or Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey. Mr. Biden leads among black voters in most polls.
