Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith said he planned to make it back to the NFL after recovering from the compound leg fracture he suffered in November.
Smith gave an interview to Fox 5 DC anchor Angie Goff — his first interview since the injury seven months ago.
Smith said he is walking without crutches, driving and playing golf now. But he is still wearing his external fixator and said he’d have it for another four to six weeks, matching a timeline coach Jay Gruden gave earlier this month.
Asked if he would play football again after the fixator came off, Smith said, “That’s the plan.”
“I gotta conquer some more steps before I get there, but yeah,” Smith said. “Learn to run again. That’s a big one. But yeah, I’m already throwing.
“The steps I’m at right now are lifestyle steps, right. I’m still working on playing basketball with my kids and, you know, running around after my daughter. There’s all those things I have to conquer anyway until I get there to the point where I’m walking on the field.”
Goff claimed she “ran into him at the mall.” Smith let her throw small dodgeballs at him, too, so the fixator must protect his leg quite well from projectiles.
