The Washington Wizards acquired wing Jonathon Simmons and the rights to the 42nd overall draft pick from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for cash considerations, then had the 76ers use the pick on Tennessee small forward Admiral Schofield.
Washington entered Thursday without a second-round pick. The Wizards dealt their original 2019 second-rounder four years ago when they acquired the draft rights to Kelly Oubre Jr.
Schofield played four seasons for Tennessee, which became one of the highest-ranked teams in college basketball in recent years. The Volunteers advanced to the Sweet 16 last season.
Schofield, 22, is 6-foot-5 and 241 pounds with a 6-foot-10 wingspan. He averaged 16.5 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2 assists per game as a senior. Scouting reports describe him as a “marksman” with a “very good motor.”
Schofield’s brother O’Brien Schofield and cousin Bobby Engram both played for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.
Simmons, meanwhile, has averaged 8.3 points and 20.5 minutes per game in his four-year career with stops with the Spurs, Magic and 76ers.
The Wizards took Gonzaga forward Rui Hachimura in the first round, No. 9 overall.
