SAN DIEGO (AP) - Residents hoping to rebuild a World War II memorial that once stood outside a San Diego library are searching for old photos of the monument.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Thursday that the group Friends of San Ysidro wants to recreate the memorial wall that was removed for unknown reasons years ago.
The group has a single wallet-sized photo of the old memorial in the community of San Ysidro, but more than a dozen of the 147 listed names are illegible.
Jack Gechter started the effort to track down the names about five years ago after his neighbor Charlie Velazquez found the photo in a family trunk.
Gechter has worked with journalist and historian Barbara Zaragoza, but they have been unable to find answers about the memorial’s history.
