CAPE MAY, N.J. (AP) - An off-duty Philadelphia firefighter has died after participating in the Escape The Cape Triathlon in Cape May.
Jim Salmon, public information officer with the Delaware River & Bay Authority, tells the Press of Atlantic City that a participant in Sunday’s race became in need of medical attention during the Olympic swim portion.
The man was unresponsive in the water. Salmon says the man was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead about 10:20 a.m.
It’s unclear how he died. A spokesperson for the fire department tells the newspaper that details will be released according to the family’s wishes.
CBS3 Philly reports that another off-duty Philadelphia firefighter died Sunday from long-term medical issues.
Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel tweeted that the department is mourning the untimely loss of two firefighters.
