CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A group of conservatives said Sunday that they’re preparing to launch a petition to recall Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak, contending that the new Democratic governor and Democratically-controlled Legislature are passing or debating liberal legislation that infringes on freedoms, including gun rights.
The group, called Fight for Nevada, held a rally at a park in Carson City in Sunday as lawmakers were winding down their legislative session about a mile away.
Fight for Nevada filed paperwork with the Secretary of State’s office in May to form a recall committee, but the group’s president Angela Blass said they don’t intend to start gathering signatures until this fall.
A message seeking comment from Sisolak’s office was not returned.
Blass said the group plans to spend the summer holding rallies to build support for their cause and then will file a recall notice around November to begin collecting signatures. They’ll then have 90 days to try to collect roughly 240,000 signatures.
Blass said firearm-related legislation was a chief concern of the group, including a so-called “red flag” bill that the governor hasn’t yet acted on. The bill, approved by the Legislature on Saturday, attempts to keep guns away from people deemed a threat to themselves or others.
Sisolak’s office has not commented on whether he intends to sign it.
The governor campaigned on passing tougher gun legislation and signed another measure in February that would expand background checks to private gun sales and transfers.
Blass also cited other legislation as a concern, including a bill making emergency contraception more accessible, and a bill that died before making it to Sisolak’s desk that would have required police to have probable cause before holding an undocumented immigrant for federal authorities.
