DARBY, Mont. (AP) - Residents of Montana’s Bitterroot Valley are worried about the future of its federal Job Corps center.
The Trapper Creek Job Corps in Darby is one of 16 centers operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that are scheduled to be transferred to the Labor Department by the end of September and turned over to a private contractor or the state to operate. The Ravalli Republic reports that Trapper Creek’s 55 employees will lose their jobs.
Other similar centers around the country, including the Anaconda Job Corps, are set to close. They provide training in manufacturing, mechanics, carpentry and other disciplines.
Trapper Creek students have done work to help the community since the 1960s, from building a softball field to working on projects at the county fairgrounds and a food bank.
