TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Nurses who went on strike at an Ohio hospital have rejected a proposed contract agreement that union negotiators reached with the hospital.
The United Auto Workers represents about 950 nurses at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo. A union statement says 57% of voting nurses rejected the contract proposal Tuesday. The union said nurses say the proposal didn’t go far enough, especially on staffing issues.
Nurses say staffing shortages force them to routinely work extra hours and be on-call for days. They say that could affect safety.

The nurses went on strike May 6 and returned to work June 13, after the tentative agreement was reached.
The union said nurses remained on the job as of Wednesday.
