WILTON, N.Y. (AP) - Sen. Chuck Schumer wants the upstate New York cottage where President Ulysses S. Grant died to be a National Historic Landmark.

Schumer visited Grant Cottage near Saratoga Springs on Monday and said he is seeking the historic designation from the National Parks Service.

Grant finished his memoirs at the cottage and he died there of throat cancer in 1885.

The cottage is a state historic site.

Schumer says the national historic designation would help preserve the cottage and draw attention to the historical significance of the property, which is located next door to a closed state prison.
