LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a Florida deputy shot a woman who was fighting with her adult daughter.

The Ledger reports that 76-year-old Linda Wages was recovering Monday at a Polk County hospital.

The sheriff’s office says a witness called 911 Saturday after seeing Wages and her 47-year-old daughter fighting inside a car. When a deputy arrived, the daughter said Wages had a gun. The deputy says Wages ducked down at some point, making him believe she was about to shoot him or the daughter. The deputy fired and hit Wages at least once in the side.

Investigators didn’t find a gun in the car. The daughter told deputies that Wages claimed she had a gun in her purse just before their fight. Wages faces battery and other charges.

The races of Wages and the deputy weren’t reported.
