Gov. Steve Sisolak has signed a bill toughening Nevada’s public records law to crack down on any government agencies that intentionally violate it.

Sisolak on Thursday signed a bill that would state and local governments to face fines from $1,000 to $100,000 for “willfully” failing to comply with the law by providing access to government records.

The governor also signed bills Thursday to award grants for prekindergarten programs, funding for several museums and other institutions and a spending bill that helps address school safety and other needs.

It includes $20 million for a new engineering building at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, $2.7 million for social workers in schools, $5.5 million for school resource officers and $4.7 million for social and emotional development programs.

Friday is the last day for the governor to sign or veto bills.

The off-year municipal elections held Tuesday will soon be held in regular election years under a new law Gov. Steve Sisolak signed.

Eight cities hold their municipal elections in odd-numbered years, including Las Vegas. But some have pushed to move the elections to even-numbered general election years to boost turnout and lower costs.

The bill Sisolak signed Wednesday requires the cities to move their elections by 2022.

The Democratic governor also signed a bill raising the marriage age, which is currently 16 with parental consent and younger with a judge’s approval. The new law raises the age to 18 but allows 17-year-olds to marry with permission from a parent and judge.

Another new law tightens campaign finance rules and bans officials from paying themselves a salary with campaign funds.
