LAS VEGAS (AP) - Clark County School District’s middle school and high school principals unanimously approved a vote of no confident Wednesday in Superintendent Jesus Jara following his announcement that he was cutting all 170 dean positions at their schools to close a projected $17 million budget deficit.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports school leaders are upset they were not consulted about the cuts ahead of time and that deans learned their jobs would be eliminated in an online video.
Deans supervise teachers and oversee school safety, something critics say will be threatened by the job cuts.
Jara apologized at a town hall later Wednesday but said he felt eliminating the dean jobs was the best move.
The school district did not respond to a message seeking comment.
