.Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn has hired Sidney Powell, a critic of former special counsel Robert Mueller, as his new attorney, Ms. Powell confirmed Wednesday.
“All I can say now is that I’m honored to be representing him,” she said in an email to The Washington Times. “He is going to continue to cooperate.”
Ms. Powell said she will ask a federal judge for 90 days to get up to speed on the case
“There is a lot of information to process,” she wrote.
A former federal prosecutor and unabashed critic of Mr. Mueller, Ms. Powell is a frequent contributor to Fox News.
Flynn fired his attorneys with the firm Covington & Burling last week.
The changeup comes at a crucial time in the Flynn saga. He is expected to be a witness for the government in a trial this summer against his former lobbying partner. He is also is trying to convince a skeptical federal judge that he does not deserve jail time for lying to investigators about his contacts with the former Russian ambassador.
During a sentencing hearing in December, Judge Emmet G. Sullivan questioned whether Flynn had accepted responsibility despite the glowing recommendation from Mueller’s team, which requested he not receive any jail time.
After a dressing down by Judge Sullivan, Flynn asked to delay his sentencing to continue his cooperation with the government.
In an op-ed prior to Flynn’s sentencing hearing, Ms. Powell strongly suggested prosecutors and the FBI may have withheld from him relevant information in his case.
“Mueller has shown abject contempt for the wrong court. Judge Sullivan is a real judge who believes in the rule of law and has the integrity to enforce it equally,” Ms. Powell wrote in The Daily Caller. “The evidence strongly suggests Mueller violated Brady, destroyed or suppressed evidence, and obstructed justice. He has disgraced himself and the Department of Justice. Mueller’s time is up.”
The Brady doctrine that Ms. Powell referenced means prosecutors are required to provide all evidence that could lead to the exoneration of a defendant.
