Vice President Mike Pence defended the State Department’s decision to ban U.S. embassies from flying rainbow LGBTQ flags on their flagpoles during Pride month, adding that it was the “right decision.”
“I’m aware that the State Department indicated that on the flagpole of our American embassies that one flag should fly, and that’s the American flag, and I support that,” Mr. Pence said in an interview with NBC News.
When the vice president was asked whether that decision opposed Mr. Trump pledging his support for the LGBTQ community, Mr. Pence said he still supported the decision.
“As the president said on the night we were elected, we’re proud to be able to serve every American. We both feel that way very passionately, but when it comes to the American flagpole and American embassies and capitals around the world, having the one American flag fly is the right decision.”
Mr. Pence added the State Department has put “no other restrictions” on displaying Pride flags elsewhere around the embassies.
