ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The New York State Bar Association is launching a new effort designed to support and protect local news outlets as the industry continues to shrink.
The Association announced Monday that it is creating a task force to study the problem and provide a legal perspective on the challenges facing American journalism.
According to the Association, the number of local news organizations in New York has fallen by 34 percent since 2004.
David McCraw, the deputy general counsel for The New York Times, will co-chair the task force. He says local journalism provides a “foundational element” of American democracy and civic culture.
Task force members plan to hold hearings in New York City, Albany and Syracuse. The Bar Association says the panel is expected to release their findings in 2020.
