BOSTON (AP) - More than one year after creating the position, the Massachusetts House has named an Equal Employment Opportunity officer to investigate future sexual misconduct allegations.

John McLafferty most recently worked as an employment attorney in the Boston law firm of Day Pitney.

The House established the position in March 2018 as a key part of new procedures for dealing with allegations of sexual harassment by House lawmakers or staff, while protecting the confidentiality of accusers and witnesses.

The House Rules Committee, which was tasked with filling the positon, said in December it had been unable to find a suitable candidate for the job, but would continue looking.

The committee says McLafferty appointment is for two years and he will operate autonomously from legislative leadership.

This story has been corrected to show appointee’s last name is McLafferty, not McCaffrey.
