SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - A University of Rhode Island-based initiative that has expanded biomedical research capacity at colleges across the state has received an additional $20 million in federal funding.
The Rhode Island Idea Network of Biomedical Research Excellence, funded by the National Institutes of Health since 2001 with $61 million in grants, was established to expand cancer, neuroscience and environmental health sciences research capacity.
The new grant announced Monday will help establish positions to encourage outstanding students to remain part of the biomedical workforce in Rhode Island, and the expansion of the existing teaching postdoctoral fellows program.
The new grant will also help launch community engagement activities and new collaborations with other existing research programs.
URI partners with Brown, RIC, Providence, Bryant, Roger Williams, Salve Regina and CCRI in the program.
