SHEFFIELD, Ala. (AP) - Saturday was clean-up day along the Muscle Shoals TVA Reservation trails.
The Tennessee Valley Authority sponsored a volunteer clean-up day as part of the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day celebration.
Volunteers for the project were to concentrate on picking up trash along the trails, but they also were available to do some light maintenance, such as some limb trimming, The TimesDaily reported.
Derek South of TVA Natural Resources said tools, gloves, trash bags and water were provided for volunteers.
“We’re just trying to do a little maintenance and a little cleanup before it gets hot,” South said.
TVA spokesman Scott Fiedler said the cleanups last year netted 1.5 tons of trash. In the Pickwick Dam area, 3 tons were collected.
According to the TVA website, the trail system includes 17 miles of paved and primitive trails and bikeways. It connects to several historic sites, including the old railroad bridge over the Tennessee River, Civil War earthworks, remnants of a World War I era steam plant, the original railroad used during the construction of Wilson Dam, and structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.
Fiedler said the clean-up day is a way to get individuals who may not have been on the trails into the reservation to see what it has to offer.
“Some of the people who come walk the paved trails have never been off the paved ones,” South said. “Kind of what we’re doing is showing people what’s available, and bringing an awareness to the whole trail system.”
