BARRE, Vt. — Vermont Gov. Phil Scott has returned to stock car racing at a local track after taking much of last year off.
Vermont Public Radio reports that the Republican Scott had opted not to race at Thunder Road in Barre last year after opponents of gun legislation that he signed into law in April of 2018 threatened to demonstrate at the track.
Scott says he didn’t want there to be protests. He says he didn’t want “to have the politics come into something that’s supposed to be there for entertainment and enjoyment.”
He raced a few times at the end of the summer and has returned to Thunder Road on a regular basis this year.
He recently won the main event at the track and says, “It’s good to be back.”
