HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii Island is expected to bear the brunt of winds, high surf and possible flooding, forecasters said.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory for all islands and a flash flood watch for the Big Island Sunday, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Sunday.
The weather service also issued a gale watch and small craft advisory for waters around the leeward and southeast side of the Big Island and for Alenuihaha Channel.
The flash flood watch was issued for the Big Island from Sunday evening through late Monday night.
The high surf advisory is in effect through 6 a.m. Monday and calls for 6- to 9-foot (1.83 to 2.74-meter) waves through Sunday for eastern shores of Molokai, Oahu and Kauai; 7- to 12-foot (2.13 to 3.66 meter) surf for eastern shores of the Big Island and Maui; and 5- to 8-foot (1.52 to 2.44 meters) waves for southern shores of all islands.
The potential for flooding rainfall away from the Big Island appears less likely, but all islands are likely to see some heavy rainfall and “expansions to the flash flood advisory are definitely a possibility,” forecasters said Sunday.
The unsettled weather is the remains of former hurricane and tropical storm Barbara, which was a powerful Category 4 storm but fell apart in the central Pacific Saturday, officials said.
Barbara’s remnants are expected to pass south of the Big Island Monday before weakening Tuesday as it moves west.
The initial threat of heavy rain will be over windward areas, spreading to leeward areas on Monday, the weather service said.
