The Washington Wizards added another shooter to their roster Saturday, trading for San Antonio Spurs forward Davis Bertans as part of a three-way deal that also includes the Brooklyn Nets.
The Wizards will absorb Bertans, a 6-foot-10 forward who shot 43% from deep last season, onto its roster using part of their $8.6 million trade exception, which was created last season when they dealt for Wesley Johnson at the trade deadline. Bertans, 26, is entering the final year of his contract and is set to make $7 million next season.
As part of the deal, the Wizards will send the draft rights of forward Aaron White to Brooklyn, while San Antonio will land veteran forward DeMarre Carroll in a sign-and-trade. Carroll will then sign a three-year, $21 million deal with the Spurs.
Washington, meanwhile, desperately needed another forward after losing Trevor Ariza, Bobby Portis and Jeff Green in free agency. On Friday, Washington traded center Dwight Howard in exchange for veteran CJ Miles. While Miles is set to make $3 million more than Howard, the 32-year-old is a versatile forward who can play either forward spot.
Bertans averaged eight points and 3.5 rebounds in 21.5 minutes per game last season. He started 12 of 76 games, as well.
According to ESPN’s salary cap guru Bobby Marks, Washington is now in the luxury tax again, but can get out of it by waiving their non-guaranteed contracts, worth $8.9 million.
