CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina police officer has resigned following an investigation into his ticket-writing practices.

A statement from the Charleston Police Department says officer Michael Baker quit after an internal review found he’d written unwarranted tickets to drivers without their knowledge.

The department says the officer was artificially inflating the number of tickets he wrote to hide the fact he wasn’t properly patrolling his area. It says a second officer is under investigation for the same thing.

Baker hasn’t commented publicly, but the department says he acknowledged the wrongdoing. He had been with the department for about five years.

A police statement says all pending tickets written by Baker and the other officer who is under review are being dismissed.
