AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine will indefinitely extend its 10-school cap on the number of charters allowed to open.
The Portland Press Herald reports such a law was enacted without the signature of Democratic Gov. Janet Mills.
Mills’ spokeswoman said she preferred an independent evaluation of Maine’s system of nine public charter schools that are run independently, often with a specialized mission.
The 10-school cap was originally due to expire at the end of 2021. Maine spends $23.67 million on charter schools serving 2,240 students.
State data shows 50.2% of students statewide tested at or below expectations for English and language arts, while 37% tested at that level in math in 2017-2018.
Meanwhile, scores at charter schools ranged from 21.43 to 80.23% for language arts and for six schools: 12.82% to 43.35% for math.
