MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) - Officials near Naval Air Station Whidbey Island are at odds over Washington state’s lawsuit against the Navy in its plans to expand jet operations there.

The Skagit Valley Herald reported Tuesday that Oak Harbor Mayor Bob Severns in a letter to state Attorney General Bob Ferguson called the lawsuit unjustifiable and a waste of resources.

The lawsuit filed earlier this month claims the Navy failed to adequately consider the effect that additional flights would have on people or wildlife.

The Navy plans to add three dozen jets on the island north of Seattle.

Island County Commissioner Helen Price Johnson says the lawsuit just aims to require a more detailed review and it doesn’t threaten the Navy’s plans for growth.

The Navy has declined to comment on the lawsuit.
